A Brief Note on Walking with a GPS

The availability of inexpensive Geographical Positioning System devices has been a great boon for both established ‘map-reading’ walkers and beginners alike. If you enjoy exploring the countryside, and particularly if you progress to working out your own walks there is nothing like the security of the GPS when used in conjunction with the old friend an Ordnance Survey map. Do not confuse this with a motorist’s Sat Nav, even though they use the same basic satellite technology, the sat nav is designed to get you from A to B, the GPS is designed to let you enjoy the process of getting anywhere you like. You can buy a good GPS for less than £100, (mine is a Garmin GPS-60) and once you have ‘tasted’ the security they offer you will be hooked, particularly in new territory.
